Blue Murder at Kudu: A Very British Murder Mystery Novel set in Africa (Crime Fiction Bestsellers)

Blue Murder at Kudu: A Very British Murder Mystery Novel set in Africa (Crime Fiction Bestsellers) Review

Blue Murder at Kudu: A Very British Murder Mystery Novel set in Africa (Crime Fiction Bestsellers) Overview

It has long been postulated that isolation is a fertile breeding ground for madness, and Kudu - a remote town deep in 1930's British Central Africa - is perhaps as good an evidence of this theory as you're ever likely to encounter. The locust-ridden outpost is home to the H.Q of the British District Commissioner - widely regarded as a raving lunatic - and half a dozen colonial officers who detest him.

When a freak show arrives in town, the local tribes are convinced that the prize exhibit, "Lion Man", is the finest achievement of a powerful witchdoctor who predicted he would one day turn an animal into a man. The witchdoctor, on his way to Gaol for an unrelated offence, escapes from custody, and the resident magistrate who sentenced him is found dead on the police parade ground. No weapon, no footprints.

Whilst the District Commissioner - convinced that the magistrate's death is part of a plot by the Boer government in the South to invade the territory - puts Kudu on a war footing, the chief of police discovers that the magistrate had a rather racy private life.

Meanwhile, Bubsy Flaherty, the barmaid at Hickory’s Bar and Belle of Kudu becomes infatuated with the Lion Man; a development with (un?)predictably disastrous consequences!

Take No More (The murder mystery thriller)

Take No More (The murder mystery thriller) Review

Take No More (The murder mystery thriller) Overview

My name is James Blake.

A single act turns my life upside down. I come home to find my wife, Julia, shot and bleeding. She dies in my arms.

The police are no help. I'm sure they're trying to fit me up for the murder.

I check Julia's messages and find just one. It says 'help me'. It comes with a strange, old-looking
image of a woman being seduced. It's all I have to go on. That and the fact that someone is trying to kill me.

But I will find Julia's killers, no matter what it takes.

5 star reviews:

'It was a few pages before I realized what I was reading: a sort of modern noir. I walked in the hero's shoes, was privy to his thoughts and intruded on his emotions as he was drawn into the mystery of his wife's death. Kirby's spare yet rich prose, his perfect word choices, made this a work that appeared to be effortlessly constructed. That seamlessness is the hallmark of a gifted writer. Definitely recommended.' (Rebecca Forster)

'From the first pages 'Take No More' held me enthralled and it delivered on every promise it made. It is a rich story set in a complex tapestry of characters and settings.'

'This is an outstanding debut novel by Seb Kirby. He captivates the reader from the first page, and remains gripping and compelling throughout. I could not put this book down.'

'If You Like Harlan Coben, you'll love 'Take No More' .....my favorite kind of thriller...' (Libby Fischer Hellmann)

'The comparisons with Harlan Coben are well merited because this is a gripping thriller in the same vein. It begins with the aftermath of a violent act and doesn't let up until the end. As an author who always aims for momentum and suspense myself, I take my hat off to Kirby.' (John Harding)

'Take No More' is fast-paced, 69,000 words, about 260 print pages.

Free Mystery Books For Kindle: Linked List Of Over 400 Classic Crime And Detective eBooks For Kindle And iPad

Free Mystery Books For Kindle: Linked List Of Over 400 Classic Crime And Detective eBooks For Kindle And iPad Review

Free Mystery Books For Kindle: Linked List Of Over 400 Classic Crime And Detective eBooks For Kindle And iPad Overview

This list of all the free classic mystery and crime eBooks on Amazon works best on iPad and Kindle 3. If you click the linked title, it will bring you directly to the product page for the free eBook in the Kindle store. If you are using a Kindle 3, an iPad, or other eBook reader with a decent web browser, you can sign into your Amazon account and download the eBook immediately.

If you are reading on an older Kindle 2 or Kindle 1, you can add the book to your Wish List and the next time you use a computer to access Amazon, you can have the Wish List items sent to your Kindle for free. Or, if you want to begin reading a eBook immediately on an older Kindle, you can simply note the title and cover design of the linked eBook in the Kindle store, and then search for the title with your Kindle. If there are multiple copies, pick the one with the cover that matches, confirm that it is free, and then download it to your Kindle.

I began building handpicked collections of free Kindle eBooks last year after my father paid several dollars for classic book when the identical version was available on Kindle for free. With over 60 mystery and crime authors in this collection, I hope it leads you to some new favorites.

The selection of authors and titles for this list wasn't a straightforward task. In cases of lesser know novelists like Harding or less prolific crime/philosophy writers like Dostoyevsky, I included all of their free novels. With literary giants like Dickens and Conrad I only include the mystery/crime novels. Wodehouse was known for both comedy and mystery. Rohmer also dabbled in the occult, Stoker is more identified with horror. Lytton's crime stories are categorized "Newgate Fiction" rather than mysteries, but he's included here for coining "It was a dark and stormy night" in the novel "Paul Clifford".

THE COMPLETE MYSTERY NOVELS OF AGATHA CHRISTIE Vol 1 (Special Edition) THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF ALL TIME AGATHA CHRISTIE EARLY WORKS (Hercule Poirot: ... Agatha Christie Complete Works Kindle) Overview

THE COMPLETE MYSTERY NOVELS OF AGATHA CHRISTIE Vol 1 (Special Kindle Edition)

By Agatha Christie

THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF ALL TIME WITH OVER 4 BILLION COPIES SOLD!

Volume 1 of this collection contains Agatha Christie's early including works, including her very first novel and the first introduction to Hercule Poirot in The Mysterious Affair at Styles as well as the first introduction to Tommy and Tuppance in the critically acclaimed detective novel The Secret Adversary.

THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES

The Mysterious Affair at Styles is Christie's first published novel, and introduces Hercule Poirot, Inspector (later, Chief Inspector) Japp and Lieutenant Hastings (later, Captain). The story is told in first person by Hastings, and features many of the elements that, thanks to Christie, have become icons of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. It is set in a large, isolated country manor. There are a half-dozen suspects, most of whom are hiding facts about themselves, and a number of red herrings and surprise plot twists.

The Times Literary Supplement gave the book an extremely enthusiastic review, which stated that "The only fault this story has is that it is almost too ingenious". It went on to describe the basic set-up of the plot and concluded: "It is said to be the author's first book, and the result of a bet about the possibility of writing a detective story in which the reader would not be able to spot the criminal. Every reader must admit that the bet was won".

The New York Times Book Review was also impressed:

"Though this may be the first published book of Miss Agatha Christie, she betrays the cunning of an old hand … You must wait for the last-but-one chapter in the book for the last link in the chain of evidence that enabled Mr. Poirot to unravel the whole complicated plot and lay the guilt where it really belonged. And you may safely make a wager with yourself that until you have heard M. Poirot's final word on the mysterious affair at Styles, you will be kept guessing at its solution and will most certainly never lay down this most entertaining book." Poirot was described as a "delightful little old man".

THE SECRET ADVERSARY

The Secret Adversary is a work of detective fiction by Agatha Christie and first published in the United Kingdom in January 1922 and in the United States later in that same year. The novel introduces the characters of Tommy and Tuppence who feature in three other Christie books and one collection of short stories written throughout her writing career.

Upon publication of the first book edition it was reviewed by The Times Literary Supplement which described it as "a whirl of thrilling adventures". It stated that the characters of Tommy and Tuppence as "refreshingly original" and praised the fact that the "identity of the arch-criminal, the elusive "Mr Brown", is cleverly concealed to the very end".

The New York Times Book Review was also impressed, stating, "It is safe to assert that unless the reader peers into the last chapter or so of the tale, he will not know who this secret adversary is until the author chooses to reveal him." The review said that Christie "gives a sense of plausibility to the most preposterous situations and developments." Nevertheless they conceded that, "Miss Christie has a clever prattling style that shifts easily into amusing dialogue and so aids the pleasure of the reader as he tears along with Tommy and Tuppence on the trail of the mysterious Mr. Brown. Many of the situations are a bit moth-eaten from frequent usage by other writers, but at that Miss Christie manages to invest them with a new sense of individuality that renders them rather absorbing."

Robert Barnard: "The first and best (no extravagant compliment this) of the Tommy and Tuppence stories. It tells how the dauntless pair foils a plot to foment labour unrest and red revolution in Britain, masterminded by the man behind the Bolshevists. Good reactionary fun, if you're in that mood".
